Understanding Brunette To Blonde Transformation

There's quite a lot to consider when changing your hair colour from brunette to blonde. Your hair history, current brunette shade and desired blonde shade are first items on our agenda. Do you have some grey/white hair as well as brown hair? This needs considering too, as your white hair will need some initial coverage.

Your hair history is vital because it's important to recognise that your hair should be in good condition before this transformation, as the process requires the use of chemicals.

During a blonde transformation of two shades lighter (or more if appropriate), bleach is applied to your hair in which your natural colour is “lifted”, effectively stripped of your naturally dark shade. Virgin hair, which has not pre-coloured, is generally healthier than coloured hair, and is the easiest type of hair to go from brown to blonde. If your hair has been previously coloured, your priority should be strong and healthy hair first, and avoid bleaching hair that is already compromised. We recommend plenty of hair treatments to help strengthen your hair and we can offer this service ourselves in combination with your regular appointment.

Picking The Correct Tone Of Blonde

When changing your hair colour from brunette to blonde, you should consider a tone of blonde which will compliment your skin tone and your eye colour. This process can be achieved with toning, which is applied to remove brassy tones and correct your hair colour to your desired tone.

Look at your complexion and skin tone. As a rule of thumb, it generally works well to match warmer complexion to warmer hair colour, and it's the same with cooler complexions. Do you have pink undertones, blue eyes or cool brown eyes? Cool blonde colours are great options, such as Icy, Platinum and Ash Blonde. Warm tones of blonde like caramel, honey and creamy blonde look gorgeous on women with a warmer complexion, hazel eyes. But if we're really honest, you should go with the shade that you truly desire..

What Are My Blonde Hair Options?

The most popular form of blonde hair colouring is called highlighting. This is a technique in which strands of hair are woven in combination with bleach and foils. This results in a glorious layered tonal effect. We then apply a toner to complete the look. As your hair grows out you will need regular appointment (t-section highlights) to maintain your hair colour.

If you do not want a patch test and have virgin brunette hair, we can use magma by Wella professionals range which can lighten (bleach) and tone your hair. Alternatively we can apply bleach foils without a patch test and then use Wella colour mask which acts as a toner for 4-10 washes.

The alternative to highlights would be a balayage, which is an effect with more subtle sweeps of colour throughout the hair, often starting darker towards the roots and becoming more denser as it moves down the section of the hair to the ends.

A more dramatic blonde approach would be called back to back foils. We offer this service on special request only and price is on consultation based on length and thickness of your hair. Unlike with traditional highlights, none of your hair is left out of foils e.i the hair is not woven. This takes longer than traditional highlights, and will give you a more blonder result, and may be an option for colour correction when a very dominant solid blonde colour is required

How Long Does It Take To Go Blonde?

Initially, you need to set aside a few hours for your mobile hairdressing appointment. Virgin hair will lift easier than pre-coloured hair, and in an even manner. Pre-coloured hair can lift to various levels in different places, and thus can be more challenging to make the colour even. That's why should always leave hair colouring to our professionals.

Whilst you do not need to patch test for the process of bleaching, you may for the toning afterwards which helps create your desired tone. This has to be completed no later than 48 hours before your toning application. If you cannot wait for a patch test and are looking for a more temporary solution we have toning style products which can last for 4-10 washes. In those circumstances it's worth considering having a patch test for a longer-lasting toner for your next appointment.

The actual appointment length is determined by your current shade, your desired shade and any special processes involved which may be unique to your hair. A full head of highlights will take less time than a back to back foils process.

Blonde Hair Is A Long Term Commitment

It is important to consider that no hairdresser can guarantee there will be no breakage, even despite using Olaplex or additional treatments. Blonde hair is also a commitment which is on a long-term basis; you may require multiple appointments to reach your desired shade in a healthy manner, but most importantly blonde hair requires regular upkeep and maintenance. This is in the form of treatments to ensure the hair remains healthy, we also recommend using purple shampoos to reduce brassy tones, but most importantly you will need regular appointments with your hairdresser to upkeep to recolour any regrowth. This can be every 5-8 weeks on average.

Avoid Box Dyes!

Avoid using home use box dyes as these cause damage to your hair, and cannot create an effective, professional salon look in a transformation from brunette to blonde. Your hair would be left horribly brassy, brittle and be difficult to work with afterwards. We are regularly asked to fix clients who have messed up their hair badly with box dies and this isn't always possible, so avoid using box dyes.
